New Driver Licence Rules for Car Insurance

There are new driver number requirements for car insurance coming into force in March 2025

Starting from 31st March 2025, important changes to car insurance in Ireland will take effect. To enhance road safety, the government now requires drivers to provide their driver number, along with the driver numbers of anyone named on their policy, when purchasing or renewing car insurance.

This new regulation aims to improve the accuracy of the Motor Insurance Database, which is updated daily. A more effective database will help the gardaí quickly identify uninsured drivers and vehicles.

Why are you asking for my driver number?

A change in the Road Traffic Act 2024 due to come into effect on the 31st March 2025 which requires drivers in Ireland to provide the driver numbers for each driver covered on a car insurance policy.

Where is my driver number?

You can find your driver number under section 4(d) on your driving licence. You will need to supply your driver number when renewing a car insurance policy or buying a new car insurance policy.

What happens if I don’t provide my driver number?

The new law requires that we collect the driver number for the policyholder and anyone named on the policy. Without your driver number, you will be unable to renew or buy a new car insurance policy.

What if I have an EU or foreign licence?

For EU driving licences we will need to manually verify your driver number before cover can start. You will be prompted to upload a copy of your driving licence during the purchase or renewal process. Our team will verify the driver number and confirm your cover.

How do I provide my driver number?

You only need to provide your driver number when purchasing a policy or renewing an existing policy. You will be prompted to provide this number during the purchase process.
